Honouring the Journey:
Finding Comfort and Security After Loss

Experiencing pregnancy or infant loss is an unequivocally heartbreaking experience. For many parents, the path to healing includes welcoming a rainbow baby — a term used to describe a child born after a loss. This journey can be filled with mixed emotions: joy intertwined with grief, and hope alongside anxiety. As parents navigate this sensitive time, finding ways to honour their journey while ensuring the safety and well-being of their new baby becomes essential.

Acknowledging the pain

The loss of a pregnancy or infant can leave parents feeling isolated and overwhelmed. It’s important to acknowledge the pain and grief that accompany such experiences. Many parents find solace in creating rituals or memorials for their lost children, which can help in processing their emotions. Sharing stories, lighting candles, or planting a tree in memory of their little one can provide comfort.

As parents look forward to their new arrival, they may also experience heightened anxiety about their baby's health and safety. If you’re able to access it, we recommend seeing a grief counsellor or therapist to help you work through the many emotions that may come up surrounding the loss of a baby.

Embracing the joy of a rainbow baby

Welcoming a baby is always joyful, but a rainbow baby can also bring about a whirlwind of emotions. Parents may feel excitement mixed with fear, and it’s completely normal to experience these conflicting feelings. It’s important to allow oneself to feel joy while acknowledging loss. Creating a safe and nurturing environment for the new baby can help parents focus on the present, fostering a sense of security.

Creating a safe space

Creating a safe space for a new baby involves both physical and emotional elements. Parents may want to prepare a nursery that feels comforting and welcoming. Soft colours, gentle lighting, and personal touches can make a significant difference in how a parent feels in that space.

Additionally, having the right tools at hand can help alleviate some of the anxiety associated with caring for a newborn. In our work with the UK-based Lullaby Trust — an organisation supporting and assisting parents who have suffered infant loss — we provide Snuza monitors which are invaluable to parents in providing reassurance and peace of mind.

Building a support network

When you lose a pregnancy or a baby, it’s normal to feel completely isolated from the rest of society. But, connecting with other parents who have experienced similar losses can provide a sense of community and understanding. Many find comfort in support groups, whether online or in-person, where they can share their stories and feelings without judgement.

As mentioned, in addition to peer support, professional guidance from therapists or counsellors can be invaluable. These professionals can help parents navigate their emotions and develop coping strategies. It’s also important for partners to communicate openly about their feelings and support each other throughout the healing process.

Finding balance in parenting

As new parents adjust to their roles, finding a balance between joy and grief can be challenging. It’s essential to take time to reflect on the journey while also celebrating the new life that has entered the family. Each milestone with a rainbow baby can be a moment of joy, but it’s also okay to remember and honour the child that was lost.

Honouring the journey forward

Honouring the journey of pregnancy and infant loss while welcoming a rainbow baby is a delicate balance. It’s vital to acknowledge the pain of the past while embracing the joy of the present.

As parents navigate this new chapter, they can find comfort in knowing they are not alone. Whether through personal rituals, supportive communities, or reliable monitoring devices, there are ways to honour their journey and celebrate the love that continues to grow.
